Oooops!! Book Drawing Revised!!

Have you ever had one of those days?  Well…….. I wrote on my original Ruby’s Treasures Blog Hop Day 6 post that I would draw for the winner of my book on 11/21.  I actually really meant to type 11/14, and in my head I had typed 11/14.  Yet, obviously, I actually typed 11/21!! So, since I thought I had typed 11/14, I drew the winner for my book this morning (after, in my mind, the time had come).  A short while ago, it was brought to my attention that my blog post actually said 11/21.  So, yes, the person Read More

Hi, Everyone! I’m so excited to be part of Ruby’s Blog Hop featuring the beautiful fabric Line “Vintage 30’s Ruby’s Treasures” designed by my friend, Barb Eikmeier, for Paintbrush Studios!!  In the hop, each of the six designers selected a block designed by Ruby Short McKim, featured in Ruby’s only book, 101 Patchwork Patterns.  Ruby’s book is can be found at:  http://www.101patchworkpatterns.com/ where Ruby’s block patterns can be downloaded for free!  Each designer has selected one of Ruby’s blocks to share with you using fabrics from the “Ruby’s Treasures” fabric line and has redrafted her chosen block to finish at 12″ so that the Read More

Houston Quilt Festival 2016

I am beyond thrilled that I’ll be teaching three patchwork classes at International Quilt Festival in Houston this fall!  The class offerings catalogue and online registration for Quilt Festival will be available mid-July.   Let me give you a sneak peek of what I’ll be teaching!! My first class, Painted Mountains, is on Thursday, 11/3, all day.  I truly love this quilt! I had a wonderful time working with the proportionately-sized equilateral triangles, choosing the colors and color placement, and figuring out the math for the sashing pieces!  (Yes, I’m a geek!!)  The good news is that I’ve done all the math for you, so what’s Read More

Vintage Shirting & Dress Prints Blog Hop – Day 3!!

Throughout my quilting journey, I have met some pretty amazing quilt-makers!  Many are acquaintances, yet I have the true privilege of calling some of them “friend”.  Such is the case with Barb Eikmeier, the extraordinary quilt-maker / teacher / quilt designer AND fabric designer; the one who designed this lovely fabric line of Vintage Shirtings & Dress Prints for Paintbrush Studio.  Thank you, Barb, for inviting me to “hop”! If you haven’t already “checked in” to participate in this hop, you can do so here:  Inspired by Fabric.  You won’t want to miss the “check-in” because, in addition to the Read More

What’s Kelly Cooking? Nothing, today! :)

Hi, there! Today, I’m not cooking, but I am in the kitchen.  I’m prepping! I live in Kansas, and I’m finding really great deals on beautiful, red, juicy strawberries.  I really enjoy frozen berries in my morning smoothies.  Often, if I buy the frozen bags of “berry blends” that include strawberries, the frozen strawberries are small and whole.  Even with my powerful Blendtec blender (that I love, BTW), my smoothies are often, well, not smooth.  The whole frozen strawberries, even when small, just don’t seem to get blended in the way I like them. So, I’m preparing and freezing my own! Read More

What’s Kelly Cooking? Granola!

Jeff, my DH, often likes to have granola for breakfast.  He is a rock-star of a quilter husband (I’ll tell you more about that another day!), and I really like cooking up  things that he enjoys – my little “thank you, Sweetie” for all the wonderfully helpful things he does for me! So, I’m going to share my recipe* with you.  (*As I’ve mentioned before, to me, recipes are merely guidelines.  I like to mix it up (pun intended), experiment, and have fun with cooking.  I invite you to do the same!) Basic Granola: Pre-heat over to 225 degrees F.  Lightly Read More

What’s Kelly Cooking? Mamo’s Peanut Butter Shortbread Cookies

I adored my Mamo, and my Mamo adored me.  Though she died when I was in 4th grade, Mamo, my paternal grandmother, has had an indelible impact on me. Born in 1886, Mamo (Edna Bertha Steven) grew up on a farm in central Nebraska, learning all the typical things that a farm girl of that period learned, including quilt-making.  Though I never had the pleasure of seeing her making a quilt, she has played a pivotal role in fanning the flames of my hexagon quilt-making passion.   [Mamo’s Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt which is pictured in the introduction of my book, Hexagons, Diamonds, Read More

What’s Kelly cooking? Spicy Chicken Sweet Potato Stew

As a quilt-maker, I’m pretty precise:  in my cutting, in my piecing….  When it comes to cooking, well, not so much.  Recipes are merely guidelines in my kitchen.  🙂 I so enjoy soups and stews, especially in the winter!  Today, I want to share my recipe for Spicy Chicken Sweet Potato Stew.  I LOVE this stew!  It is a delicious mix of sweet and savory, with just a little heat thrown in.  Of course, you can make it as hot or mild as you wish!         Here’s what you’ll need: Chicken (cooked), 1 1/2 lb. or so, cubed (I used Read More
